Eagles Release Demetress Bell; World Celebrates
Last year, after Jason Peters tore his achilles the first of two times, the Eagles signed a replacement in the form of former Bills tackle Demetress Bell. He was given a three year contract with the first year guaranteed. At the time, the move seemed very practical.
Bell had been a target for the Eagles before Peters was injured and only wanted to play in a starting gig. When Peters was out for the year, Bell had the opportunity to start and the Eagles added the guy that had replaced Peters in Buffalo.
However, the move turned out to be a disaster. Bell was regularly beat by the speed rush with ease and always looked uncomfortable on the left side. In fact, according to ProFootballFocus, Bell was the third worst tackle in the entire league last year. Oof.
For the Eagles moving forward, expect this move as the beginning of the new beginning. Chip Kelly will likely move lots of players around as he tries to find the right guys to work his run-heavy scheme. As we know, and Kelly now knows, the offensive line needs serious improve. Thankfully he was quick to trim the fat.
