Ducking Radar: Chip Kelly Named Eagles Head Coach

First, for my own benefit…HOLY SHIT!

So, the Eagles have officially named Chip Kelly as their new head honcho.

While Kelly was considered to be Jeff Lurie’s first choice, Kelly had declared about a week ago that he would remain with Oregon. Apparently Lurie didn’t listen and continued to pursue his man.

Kelly is certainly an unorthodox guy and will bring lots of intrigue to Philadelphia. He goes for it on fourth down more frequently than most coaches and runs a speed based option-read offense. While it’s still unknown as to whether or not he’ll make any drastic  adjustments to his philosophy, it’s going to be a whole different look in Philly.

Now that Kelly has been brought in, the first question that comes up is what to do at quarterback? The Eagles reportedly told Kelly that they would keep Mike Vick around if Kelly was interested. However, Vick wants to make his full salary of $15.5 million and has been unable to fix his turnover problems of the last two seasons. It also might be hard to sell him to the fans.

On the other hand, Foles isn’t the type of QB that fits into Kelly’s system. Simply put, he doesn’t have the speed to be a legitimate threat on the ground. Therefore, the Eagles will potentially be in the market for a trade and will almost certainly draft a quarterback (though not necessarily early). We’ll have more on that in the future.

While quarterback will be an issue, the running game looks primed for a big year. I imagine both LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown are smiling at the possibilities they’ll have next year. It looks like they’ll be in line for a heavy workload as they prepare a variety of looks to keep defenses off balance.

In terms of the short-term future of the Birds, the next biggest pressing news will be the formation of Kelly’s staff. Andy Reid took most of the Eagles’ staff, including lead trainer Rick Burkholder, which means that almost every position will be filled by a new face. Whether these new coaches will be from the college or NFL ranks remains to be seen, but we will certainly fill you in on all of the updates as they occur so stay tuned throughout the next few days!
