Uh Oh: 49ers Blocking Interviews With Ed Donatell
It’s being reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network that 49ers blocked the New Orleans Saints from interviewing with secondary coach Ed Donatell. It is also likely then that the Eagles will likely not be able to speak with Donatell as well.
This is awful news.
As I detailed in my previous post, Chip Kelly has very limited ties to the NFL and will likely struggle to find a coordinator to come in when members to the defensive staff have already been added.
Unless things go well with Ted Monachino of the Baltimore Ravens, expect to hear the name Todd Grantham a ton in the next few days. Grantham is the defensive coordinator at Georgia (Brandon Boykin’s alma mater) and was connected to Kelly when he was announced as the Eagles head coach. Grantham is also a proponent of the 3-4 scheme, which Kelly would like to run.
Kelly and the Reid Conundrum
While Chip Kelly has been assembling his staff (and hanging out at the Wing Bowl), there’s been a key piece still missing: defensive coordinator.
So, despite the bevy of “unofficial” assistants with undefined roles wandering around in Eagles green I have to ask myself one simple question. Does Chip Kelly have any clue what took place the last two years?
One of, if not THE fatal move for Reid took place when the Eagles hired Jim Washburn before finding a defensive coordinator. As a result, many options declined the opportunity and Reid was forced to convert Juan Castillo over to the defensive side of the ball. Castillo had not worked on the defensive side of the ball since 1989.
This year has a similar feel.

Eagles Continue to Grow Flock in Silence

Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the Eagles have added Bill Lazor as an assistant to their staff. However, there have been no official reports from the Eagles to announce the move.
It’s business as usual in Philly.
Chip Kelly was announced as the new head coach of the Eagles on January 16th. Since then, a number of college coaches such as Rick Minter (University of Kentucky) and Jerry Azzinaro (Oregon) have been seen sporting Eagles gear and talking to recruits at the Senior Bowl. Pat Shurmur, who worked with Reid and was most recently head coach of the Browns, has been understood to be the new offensive coordinator for over a week.
And the Eagles have said nothing.
